Media Literacy Award
& Lesson #1
This award, in its third edition, recognizes those who excel at the task of making sure the young learn Media Literacy Lesson #1: how and why journalism is a good thing to have around and that some people face vicious harassment, prison or death just to do that job.
These educators help create a generation with a reduced tendency to suffer from civic cynicism and a greater chance to pay attention to good journalism and to what's happening around them.
Now, we want to do the award with as many partners as possible around the world who can use and disseminate what is learned from those who stand out in this kind of crucial teaching that is largely lacking as a core standard for media literacy teaching (more on that here).
Partners will help get word out about the award and eventual laureates, provide a jury member and will use the results to strengthen their own programs to help make sure young citizens everywhere learn those crucial lessons.
The will also join in our quest to make these crucial lessons a regular, basic part of media literacy instruction.

One of our first laureates, Janis Schachter, did two short videos with Special Adviser and laureate Dara Rosen to help educators get started in teaching both elements of the award:
🎥 On exploring the value of journalism via self-guided exploration of the threats to journalists [00:2:01]
🎥 On general approach to exploring the worth of journalism [00:03:34]
In this video she mentions this news blackout activity.
More activities here for introducing the concept of threats to journalists.
