OUR MISSION
At a time when reading, literacy and civic development are under pressure across Europe, Children's News Europe members firmly believe we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to meaningfully contribute both to the knowledge and to the wellbeing of the youngest generation.
Thus Children’s News Europe (CNE) is committed to making appropriate, trustworthy journalism accessible to children because we believe literate, relaxed, informed, media-savvy children grow more confident, understand the world better, and participate more fully in society.
In short: Informed children stand stronger.
OUR GOALS

create high-quality journalism for children by explaining local, national and international news in ways children can understand but without being childish. We cover major events and social developments, while staying close to the world of children themselves.

balance serious and lighter stories to keep news digestible and to support mental health.

serve an audience of children roughly from about age 7 to early teenage years through diverse methods and platforms, whether through schools or directly, supported by subscriptions, subsidies, advertising and/or contributions.

strive to be trustworthy, transparent, honest, inclusive, and credible

emphasize surprise and delight in stories about exceptional and everyday wonders.

always look for hope and possible solutions when it is necessary to explain difficult or disturbing events that children cannot avoid.

help children understand why rigorous, independent journalism is a good thing to have in a democracy.

interview children whenever possible and bring in experts for context, always aiming for clarity and accessibility.

highlight how children themselves can participate in civic life, from organizing a fundraiser to joining a demonstration.

actively support the rights of children as defined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (oldest and geographically most overriding)

actively support media and information literacy with resources and guidance for parents, teachers and children themselves.

view artificial intelligence with a wary eye. We believe that basic journalistic principles must remain a constant no matter what the platform or technology: Seeking the truth, defending freedom of information, practicing kindness and displaying creativity and transparency.

A REMINDER ABOUT WHO WE ARE
Children’s News Europe groups producers of news for children throughout Europe who strive to serve their audiences by offering rigorous and trustworthy journalism with a focus on context and solutions along with resources to support mental health and education, particularly media literacy. They have joined together to explore how to do that job even better. Children's News Europe is hosted by Global Youth & News Media, a French NGO association with nonprofit status also in the USA.
